Hi Sylvain, your 1042 has a more advanced stylus type than the 1012GX I was using, but I also liked the slight midrange emphasis I heard. That was why I bought another Goldring.
These are only suggestions and I mean no offence but if you find your B&W speakers bass heavy, have you tried moving them in your listening room or using a (thinner) speaker cable described as "leaner" by reviewers? These would be equivalent to turning the "bass" control

It went very quiet after I mentioned bass and treble controls. Ahem, so I wanted to ask if anyone else has considered building a Genera in the darker evenings that have returned to the Northern Hemisphere?
I recommend the Genera kit highly. It is fairly easy to build if you have electronics experience and produces a remarkable phono preamp. Musical, involving and incredibly tolerant of the noises on much played records. It shames the other phono preamps I have around, a feeling which I am sure owners of Gram Amps, Reflex, Era V, and other GSP will echo.

I don't think it's because you mentioned bass and treble controls. It is more likely the seasonal doldrums that happen this time of year. "We" seem to have become "iRobots" (to use Asimov's terminology) and "we" are under starter's orders.... It's a bit like the motor industry: now geared to September new registrations and with the "promise" of new models, the public gradually comes out of hibernation. So it is with Hi-Fi, needing the kick start of the September shows for them to take interest again - "by the left, wait for it... quick march!" Once, I must admit, I naively thought it was just the UK that "suffered" this malaise, but now I realise it is a global format and not exclusive to the northern hemisphere. It has become quite contagious... I can't remember if we had a topic on tone controls? If we do then it could be time to revisit it, and if not, we need to start such a topic - I think in the DIY section? |
